A Meditation on Personally Responsible

“3 But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, 3 for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way? 4 For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not being merely human? 5 What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8 He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. 9 For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building. 10 According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. 11 For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— 13 each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. 14 If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. 16 Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple. 18 Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,” 20 and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” 21 So let no one boast in men. For all things are yours, 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours, 23 and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.” (1 Cor 3:1-23 ESV)

Play by the book, and see entire life throwing conundrums and upended Visions: we anticipate something by way of a Contract with God, as taught us by parent and teacher, as taught us by just our own self-chosen Contract with Life. But God is operating on levels non sequitur, not logical deductions until rightly we understand His axiom system, His foundations, His zany Investment in the Freedom-to-Decide of His creation. We are literally Asked to go Ballistic by a Father in Heaven who lives a few echelons Above the usual “give me a little help from our friends” mindset. Help from our parental unit. Help from most loving sibling in the faith.

God asks us to “go ballistic” in the sense there simply aren’t structures and mechanisms in place to coddle us. When we do err, as we innately do tend to do, well to His Spirit, His Angels, all that is come-what-may compared to the Upward Call of Him in Christ Jesus. War is already waged. We have a utility factor already Incorporated if only we understand: no, you can’t beg for intervention, beg for coddling, beg for tutelage. Beg for a hug.

The structures built into the soldier’s milieu are Strangely Composed, Confident in our values and outlay, Strangely Invested. And Education… it teaches us that “use me as you will” isn’t quite the bargaining chip, rather, “As authorized Agent of this-and-that, I hereby counsel that this-or-that is the right word for the season”. We counsel. Father in Heaven… do we pray for God on High? Of course we pray for His Creation. We labor under the burning sun until it is evening. The structures simply aren’t in place for what we might call Intervention or Placating Talk, as if we were suddenly not responsible for our own actions, decisions. God doesn’t Coddle us. He doesn’t weep and hug it all away. All the pain. All the regrets. All the sad self-ruinous Cavalier Outlays.

He needs us, Now, and Tomorrow. We are sufficient in our Created Order of things, to accept Grace around Wrong Decisions. To accept Backing around angelic higher thoughts. No enemy can approach the throneroom of Grace without going through the Son, going through the Created Progeny, going through the Ones doing the Inviting.

Capitulating never, not allocating time and space for cried tears, He lives on such a brinksmanship of created Diachronic Diametrically-Opposed Realities, that who knows: a town, a milieu, a people are inducted by some half-cocked crazed Decisions. Who knows but that the half-crazed email sent or invitation passed on, is tipping the boat just right, in some way none can take credit for, since it was their sacrificial Error Made. Errors that Win Wars. The crazed Soldier, he or she is working for a brinksmanship and Edge-Of-Tomorrow passionate Appeal. He or she is working for a zany way unplanned ritualistic Mesmer, Trance-Induced, randomized Actions are plum and fruitful for the Journey. The strange chess strategies, now automated by the excellent intel officer, rather, excellent Soldier. We believe it ourselves, don’t we: that Christ came for Release and Redemption, in the flesh, in the mind, in the spirit, by showing us Ruin and Death on a Cross.

To the atheist, we ameliorate, we imbue, we Adopt: that He strikes the hardest bargain in the room, the bargain that None of our Deeds are sufficient to take with us, none to save. Judgment will be Severe, mocking the would-be “good deeds folk”, the average pewsitter facing a Horrified Judgment for presuming to go all belly-up and Lazy around working out one’s own salvation with fear and trembling. We intake from the atheist, that we might just scrape by come Judgment Day, as through a whirlpool and storm most severe, the Purgatory, the instantaneous Judgment Night, of first His apostles and prophets, then His clergy and prayer teams, then His arms and legs in the World, and right on down the line.
