A Meditation on Lowly Duty

“13 That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. 22 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” 25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. 28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31 And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” 33 And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.” (Lk 24:13–35 ESV)

Probably perspicacity, dynamism, soup-to-nuts Awareness, these things come to bear on the soldier’s Mentality and Outlook. He or she, must recollect Unhealthy Obsessions, really as child’s play and yet still in Danger from, capable of Ruin and melancholy Tears in the fabric. Imagine a sliding scale, and those most Unworthy, Inept, Child-like, cannot be countered with just any old Joe or Jane, but require the Giving and Patient attention of some of the most talented Spirits “out there”.

That is, our Headship is quite Subdued and Submitted, not that He as Christ’s eternally-begotten-from Father isn’t In Charge, but is subdued and submitted, to labor for just a few Errant souls “around here”. Because we Forget: our personal Dialog with the On High, mentalism and inner monologue, reverts back to an Early Childhood Experience, some thoughts of God—our mother or father in that holy realm—being Drawn Out or forced to Contribute to the frustration’s response, to the soldier’s petty request, to the childlike Trust Fall… only Now, now He is maturing us and letting us Age into a Resolve no longer petty, no longer taking blind trust falls as if “All Things” will flatter and placate our Resolve. We do trust He will catch us, but like Christ on the pinnacle of the temple, we do not Test our God and Father.

The soldier’s mission, then, is to go Route Boring, to be attentive that, no, your heady knowledge isn’t quite needful here, not yet another Perfect turn of speech or Wordsmithing, but rather to be Cognisant of the Uneducated Masses, of the Unhealthy Obsessions: your Paragon or Paradigm of things most Lofty, this the soldier refuses to respond to, rather preferring to Talk to the strange network of sins in your life, the ways all things go Haywire around a Becalming and Quieted Christ Spirit in the room.

The war, then, begins while agency and production studio, front office and warroom, all are on their own respective Tracks, until some Note from the Underground bubbles up; this is it, boys and girls, this is war. Somehow strange Networks of agents and counter-agents do find themselves—Mystical, indeed—on the same front page or dialoguing unbeknownst to some that this is really it. And the montage, that those not for us are against us: this reminds the soldier of the bearing-down Spirit of antagonism; we would like for peace and prosperous union with each other, but, Oh Dear, the tiger is provoked, the cat is Baited, the spirit in us is Attacked.

To be willing to do the Dutiful Boring Work, is to be willing to Ratchet up authority, because even in “words from the well” each of us is Uniquely Poised to reflect and respond; the lowly hourly-worker can Hear in his or her customers’ voices, manifest Sin or at least compromise. More, we earnestly Desire to be better-poised, to a point (to a fault?). Because our Victory Position, our Victory Lap, is actually going to revolve around Christ’s abandonment, Christ’s Loss on the Cross, Christ’s Mature no-need-to-thank-me Attitude: we are soldiers of a New Paradigm, and we will see it through the lens of Eternity, in a rut by the side of the road, perhaps.
