2023-06-27 A Meditation on the Airwaves
“27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, 28 and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. 29 For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, 30 engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.” (Php 1:27–30 ESV)
Trying to help each other, the words, the fountainhead of experience, the traffic in the airwaves of this saying or that proverb, one sermon or another exhortation; all this beckons us to be Creatures made new. All this is our itch for mastery, for camaraderie, for glad tidings and solemn vows. We vow therein to be there come the latter days, to be there for each other, to meet in the hereafter just with what same promise and affinity we today experience, the partner, the glad fellow or gal alongside of our own trooping personage.
With so much to say, we stare into space in wonder. We reflect on that fountainhead: it rewards and obligates all who have had a Religious Experience to assess, to reflect and imbibe what the situation comprises, to be that forward investigator and prophet, motivator of righteous Cause and Noble War. We see our own selves diagonally, diametrically as creatures hastening to the altar: we hasten because all of us are incomplete as Soldiers Made New: all of us are sinful, and plucky to compete with any and all who would parent us or guide us or be a drill sergeant unto us. We compete. We aggrandize the self. We are one moment full of gregarious giving and inspired place; another moment we covet or get jealous of the esteem or regard paid to another: “I (emphasis on ‘I’) want that to be said about me”.
And the longing for purpose and daily meaning, drives some to homeless pluck and trooping: better this than to stare into space with all my needs indulged and my meals lavish. See how evolved we are, to be capable of making that evolutionary fast or passage through dire straits. See how our regular lifestyle is so very indulgent, when in a long ago generation we hungered and thirsted for righteousness.
Therefore the airwaves give prayerful busy-ness to our waiting hours. They speak to us even as we are cozy and content with the small cubicle or trench. We dialog with unvoiced words with a Holy Spirit, who prophesies and sees wonderful things unfolding. We get confident that such-and-such is happening in this very hour, then are discouraged to learn the facts: people are still hemmed in and waiting; but on some level all such prophesy is true. It is true on some spiritual level. On some basis people are talking. If not whom we envisioned, then someone in their divine place. On some level the celebratory feast of long lost, and since then injured, fellows and gals is taking place. All this we have by way of anticipation, glad for the Spirit and hopeful in the plethora of wondrous deeds “out there”: things marvelous are occurring. Future wars are unfought, by true Inspired Principle and Cause. Things are resolved over a friendly, if a little punchy and gregarious, greeting. We worship the Spirit who inspired not just this one but that one as well, all things working together for good.
