2023-05-27 A Prayer: Enlightenment
O Lord, it is easy to pray for enlightenment; see some commiseration with Your trials; see us find enlightenment in the very place we neglect to self-discover. See us wish for wisdom and wondrous knowledge, only then to have attention divided: on this side a call to the trenches, to the prayer meeting, the bible study, the prison or the classroom. See us immediately charging forth, because You are an urgent Lord. You are promising us a future of knowledge, if only we will accept that knowledge self-discovers, is revealed by Spirit, is teaching us in those trenches and those hurried and immediate calls to serve.
See how false our assurances; see how eager our old ways; see how errant, wild, lunging, and confused habits of deed and thought can be; we pray for enlightenment in true sympathy with those who know only this prayer, whilst as for us we have the Revelation of Your Son. Who taught in halting speech, in moments deep in prayer for a deeper spiritual assessment of our hearts, that we might like the rich young ruler go away with something to chew on. So grant some simple education at Your hand, and help us to know how urgently are those so enlightened now needed. We are ready; are You today teaching us or calling us to those trenches? Or can it be You do both?
We pray all this in Your Name, Amen.
